Bill to check ground water depletion in Kerala on anvil
2 Jul 2009, 0955 hrs IST
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Seeking to curb depletion of ground water resources by commercial operators, the LDF Government in Kerala plans to bring in a Bill to amend the Ground Water Regulation Act.
State Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran told the Assembly yesterday that there had been complaints of exploitation of ground water for commercial purposes by private parties including monopolies, leading to largescale depletion of ground water in many parts of the state.
Since preservation of water sources had emerged as a major area of concern, the government planned to work out a people's action plan for conservation measures including rain harvesting and bring about a bill to amend the Ground Water Regulation Act, he said in reply to questions in the House. The Centre had cleared a Rs 1,200 crore World Bank supported drinking water scheme for the state, which would supply potable water to 400 villages in the state, the Minister said. 0 (0) |
