2 Jul 2009, 1139 hrs IST

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Education Minister M A Baby informed the state assembly today the government would take immediate steps to fill the vacancies in the colleges as part of implementing Credit and Semester System in the state.

Though the government could appoint sufficient teachers in government colleges by July itself, it would take some time in aided colleges as there were some formalities there, he said while replying to questions from V K Ibrahim Kunju and others of the Indian Union Muslim League.

Baby said the government would take steps also to appoint Professors and Assistant Professors in Universities.

Stating the government was taking steps to set up an Open University, the Education Minister said in the next phase, the Distance Education would also come under the Semester System.

Rejecting the allegation the government went ahead with the semester system in haste and without proper discussions with experts and teachers' organisations in the field, Baby said the process had started two years back and the government had taken various initiatives with the help of experts in the field.

Admitting there would have been certain lapses in the system, he said they could be solved only after introducing the system in colleges. The government would set right the defects in due course..
