Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: The entire opposition UDF today staged a walkout in the assembly to protest the delay in filling vacancies in government services through the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC).

The opposition staged a walkout after Speaker K Radhakrishnan rejected the admissibility of an adjournment motion sought to be moved by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan of the Congress. Opposing the motion, Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac said there was no delay in filling up the vacancies and the KPSC had sent advice memos to about 9,000 candidates in the last two months.

His government had created about 7,000 new posts in the last three years, whereas the previous Congress-led UDF Government had taken away about 15,000 posts, he claimed.

Dr Isaac said the government had given strict orders to various government departments to report vacancies to the KPSC.

If any lapse was noticed, the government had warned of strict action against those concerned. He also admitted a few departments might have committed a lapse in reporting vacancies in time. Moving the motion, Radhakrishnan alleged the government departments had failed in reporting vacancies, thus making backdoor appointments.

The government was also encouraging contract workers whereas the various government departments had enough vacancies.
