KOCHI, Kerala: Well known malayalam Poetess, Sugatakumari, has been selected for the 2009 Basheer award instituted by the Paravasi Trust.

The award, in memory of Vakkom Muhammed Basheer, renowned malayalam writer, has been instituted by Pravasi Trust, the Qatar based culutral organisation floated by Keralites.

The award carries a cash prize of rs 50,001/, a statuette and certifciate, the Pravasi Tust Managing Trustee Babu Mather told reporters here.

Among the previous winners are Kovilan, EMS Namboodiripad, Balan K Nair and Dr M Leelavathi.

The award would be presented at a function here in November this year.

The award selection committee comprised M T Vasudevan Nair, chairman, M A Rahman, Babu Mather, among others.
