CHRI calls for public debate on Kerala Police Act
8 Mar 2010, 0007 hrs IST
Kerala News: Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI)), a Non-Governmental Organisation, has asked the Kerala government to hold public debate on the proposed Kerala Police Act before passing it in the assembly.
'The draft prepared by the government did not comply with Supreme court guidelines on police reforms", CHRI Director and noted human rights activists Maja Daruwala told reporters here Saturday.
Many provisions proposed by the Apex court have been diluted in the draft, she alleged. The CHRI had recommended a set of suggestions to be incorporated in the draft bill after studying it, she said. She said though the government had set up a State Security Commission as per Supreme court guidelines, its composition did not comply with the norms. However, she said, compared to many other states, Kerala was far ahead in the implementation of the guidelines. The on-going budget session is likely to take up the Bill for consideration. |
